The baritone Kyros Patsalides is one of the most Cypriot artists of his generation with a distinguished international career. He studied music and singing at the Athens Conservatoire with Kiki Morfoniou from where he got the Soloist Diploma with distinction. He also studied law at the University of Athens. He continued his music studies in Vienna under the guidance of the world renowned baritones Walter Berry and Gottfried Hornik on a scholarship awarded by the The Music and Fine Arts Foundation of Cyprus. At the same time he studied Lied and Oratorio at the Music Academy of Vienna. He participated in various singing seminars given by Kostas Paschalis, Ileana Cotrubas, Janette Pilou and Luici Alva. He completed his studies in Milan studying operatic repertoire next to Adalberdo Tonini and singing technique next to Arrigo Pola and Simone Badi.
In 1995 he won the first prize in the International Song Competition of the “Arena di Veronas and Budapest Opera” with the world-renowned soprano Dame Joan Sutherland as President of the jury.
Having achieved international recognition, Kyros Patsalides appears in major opera theatres in Europe including Vienna State Opera, Teatro Filarmonico in Verona, Teatro Comunale di Spoleto, National Opera of Greece, in concert halls including Vienna Musikverein, Vienna Konzerthaus, Berlin Konzerthaus, Athens and Thessaloniki Megaron. He has also appeared in International Festivals such as the Wiener Festwochen, Kuhmo International Chamber Music Festival (Finland), Opera Festival Gijon (Spain), Wratislavia Cantans (Poland), Athens International Festival, Kypria International Festival and others.
As a soloist he collaborated with orchestras such as the Berlin Symphony Orchestra, St. Petersburg Chamber Philharmonic, Orchestra Dell´Arena of Verona, Robert Schumann Philharmonic Orchestra, Virtuosi di Moscow, all the important orchestras in Greece, Cyprus Symphony Orchestra and others.
His repertoire comprises principal roles such as Macbeth (Macbeth), Germont (La Traviata), Renato (Un ballo in Maschera), Rigoletto (Rigoletto), Conte (Il Trovatore), Belcore (L’Elisir d’Amore), Marcello (La Bohéme), Alfio (Cavalleria Rusticana), Guglielmo (Cosi fan Tutte), Gonte (Le Nozze di Figaro), Escamilio (Carmen), Enrico (Lucia di Lammarmoor),Donner (Das Reingold), Flora Mirabilis by Samaras and the title role in the Greek contemporary opera Kariotakis by Theodorakis, Aristoteles in The Great Alexander by Astrinides, Priester in Constantinos Paleologos by Kalomiris. His sacred music repertoire includes parts in F. Mendelssohn’s Paulus, Haydn’s The Creation and Harmoniemesse, Brahms’s Deutsches Requiem, Gounod’s Μesse Solennelle, Faure’s Requiem, Beethoven’s 9th Symphony.
He has represented Cyprus in various international events with great success and earned enthusiastic praise by international critics. He has been honoured by various political and cultural institutions for his contribution to the musical life in Cyprus.
