Tasos Stylianou

Tasos Stylianou was born in the island of Cyprus. He moved to New York at the age of 19 where he studied Music at Mannes College of Music, Jazz Performance at the New School for Social Research where he received his BFA. He studied Composition privately with Henry Martin and at Queens College with Morris Rosenzweig, Thea Musgrave and Paul Levy, where he received his MA in Composition.

He holds a Ph.D. in Composition from the University of Utah where he studied composition with Morris Rosenzweig. He has participated in many lectures, seminars and private sessions with composers such as Mario Davidovsky, Johnathan Harvey, Steven Mackie, Paul Lanskey, Chen Yi and many others.

Tasos Stylianou has been an active composer and performer for many years. His music has been performed several times in the United States and in Europe and received numerous awards and honors such as the Leroy Robertson Composition Prize, the Leroy Robertson Scholarship in Composition and honorary awards from international competitions such as the RARE/SCALE Alto Flute competition and ALEA III Composition Competition.

He has received commissions from Utah’s Classical Greek Theatre Company for the music to Oedipus at Colonus, from world-known flutist Carlton Vickers and percussionist Glen Web. His music has been performed by Music Ensembles such as the New York New Music Ensemble, Canyonlands New Music Ensemble, ALEA III, Eighth Blackbird, University of Utah's New Music Ensemble and others. He is currently a full-time faculty member at University of Nicosia.
